Old School Tattoos – Why The Popularity?

Old School Tattoos – Why The Popularity?
By Susan Olofsson

Why the rise in popularity? How did they start and who are the original tattoo artists that brought these bold, bright tattoo designs to us?

If you follow tattooing back to the first part of the century, you will find a few incredibly talented, wonderfully colorful characters. Top among these fine characters is “Sailor Jerry”. Story goes, Sailor Jerry began his career traveling around the country on freight trains and tattooing the drifters. He joined the Navy at 19 and sailed the Pacific. If you look at Sailor Jerry’s artwork, you can see the influence of Southeast Asia. Sailor Jerry’s images have bold deep outlines, bold blocks of color, and large, oversized images.

Old School Tattoo Designs include imagery of stars, hearts and daggers. There are anchors, and nautical themes. What we now would say is “pirate imagery” are all found in Old School Tattoos. Beautiful, busty pin-up girls, suggestive women, skeletons, and skulls. Hearts with daggers through them and roses with massive thorns and ribbons, in bold bright colors with deep outlining. Everything that we now would consider “vintage” is included in the imagery of Old School Tattoos. They have almost a whimsical and animated quality.

Two of Sailor Jerry’s students, Ed Hardy and Mike Malone have been extremely influential in keeping interest in, and reviving the Old School Tattoo Designs. Ed Hardy and Mike Malone both use the bold patterns and the bright colors typical in Old School Tattoos. Images are outlined and you can see the Asian influence in the design.

When Sailor Jerry died, he left instructions that one of his students, Ed Hardy or Mike Malone, could buy his tattoo shop in Hawaii. Mike Malone took the offer and with the purchase of the shop, he also got all of Sailor Jerry’s artwork. That artwork, or “flash” can now be seen on tattoo shop walls all across America.

Don Ed Hardy, on the other hand, exploded his popularity and brought Old School tattoo designs to the main stream by licensing his artwork to Christian Audigier. Ed Hardy Designs was formed and Christian Audigier began incorporating the artwork into fashion. This was the first time tattoo design and tattoo artwork has made it to the runways of Paris, New York and Italy. Ed Hardy artwork and tattoo design could now be seen on Rock Stars and Celebrities alike. The Beautiful Old School Tattoo Designs were now part of mainstream culture and highly sought after.

Maybe another reason for the rise in popularity of Old School Tattoos is the simple fact that we have a fascination with “vintage” What’s old is new. This happens in fashion all the time. How many times have you heard people say, “I had those gym shoes in 7th grade”, or “That blouse is in my moms attic”. From brands like Puma, Nike, P.F. Flyers to Levi, there is always a vintage look or design just around the corner. Old School Tattoos are the “vintage” of the tattoo world. They are also the brightest, most colorful, quirky, kitschy and whimsical tattoo designs. If you are looking for a “vintage” look in your tattoo design, beautiful busty pin-up girls, colorful funky skulls, pierced hearts, fat roses with ribbon sayings, check out the Old School Tattoos. And here is a piece of advice from the infamous Lyle Tuttle: “Don’t put anyone’s name on your tattoo. They are not going to be around forever. Just put “Sweetheart” and call them ALL “Sweetheart”.”

Peace always.

HAWAIIAN TATTOOS-TRIBALS AND FLOWERS

June 1st, 2009

Hawaiian Tattoos

Do you want a Hawaiian tattoo? Do you want a traditional Hawaiian Tattoo? If you do hang on tight! Traditional Hawaiian Tattoos are applied with a sharpened bone chisel and stick that is tapped into your skin until it bleeds. Once the incision is made with the chisel, ink is rubbed into the wound to form the lines of the tattoo. O.K. The Hawaiian Tattoos may be beautiful, but I don’t know if it is worth this kind of pain, or exposure to infection.

Luckily, we have an easier way of applying tattoos. Still painful, but not nearly as painful or time consuming as a Traditional Hawaiian Tattoo. The Polynesian culture is currently bringing us the most insanely popular tattoos of our time. The Tribal Tattoo. Tribal Tattoos are

Originally, Hawaiian tattoos were based around the Hawaiian culture. Like all the Polynesian cultures, the traditional tattoo designs are beautiful in their simple lines and curvilinear shapes. Many have maps of voyages tapped into the skin to mark a courageous crossing or trip. These tattoos are typically found on the leg. The tattoos were also used to differentiate between the classes. The more standing you had in your village, the more tattooing you would wear. Hard for us to remember that not that long ago, Hawaii had a King. If you were a member of the Hawaiian royalty, you would show that pride through the tattoos you wore.

Modern Hawaiian tattoos are typically based on the tribal tattoo with the accent on the beauty of the islands. It is typical to see a tribal tattoo with a gorgeous Hawaiian flower woven into the design. Hawaiian flower tattoos are very popular with women that are looking for a very feminine tattoo. It can circle the ankle, or wrist. It can start at the lower back and come around to the belly or down the leg. Gorgeous.  Wonderful Hawaiian flower tattoos adorn both men and women. Palms trees, beautiful Hawaiian flora, waterfalls, wave themes, you name it, there is a Hawaiian Tattoo to go with it.

Finding Hawaiian or Polynesian tattoo designs can cause you some difficulty. You can try to find the perfect design on the “free sites” but if you really want the perfect design, spend a few bucks and join one of the tattoo membership sites. They are a bargain. You can view thousands of professional artist drawn tattoo designs and download as many as you like. After you find a few that you like, it is easy to copy and paste them together to get your perfect unique Hawaiian Tattoo.

After all, if you are going to go the trouble to have that perfect Hawaiian Tattoo carved into your skin (kidding, thank God for technology), it better be something you want to live with for life.
Check out the sites below for your perfect Hawaiian Tattoo Design.
Peace always.

There seems to be an explosion in the popularity of tribal tattoos. Specifically, shoulder and back tribal pieces. Everywhere you look, from celebrity to Average Joe, someone has got a beautiful, striking tribal tattoo on their shoulder. Or they have the the tribal tattoo that goes from one shoulder, across the back, and down the other shoulder. Why are they fast becoming the most popular tattoo? How do you choose the best tribal tattoo design for you? Do a little research. Check out tribal tattoo designs in your culture or heritage. You are sure to get tons of ideas. I did a little research on tribal tattoos, and I now have a few theories as to the popularity surge. Probably the most important of all of these theories is that tribal Shoulder Tattoos look so cool!

Tribal tattoos were used in different cultures to delineate between the tribes. They were also used to distinguish between classes or rank within the tribe. Everyone in the tribe had some form of the tattoo. In most cultures, the tattoos were given in a ceremonial way, to celebrate the passage from childhood to adulthood.

It is widely believed that the Polynesian culture brought us our most popular tribal Tattoos. The Samoans, the Maori, the Hawaiians. The most detailed of these are the Maori. These tattoos are intricate and curvilinear in nature. They are based on the spiral which give them such powerful movement within the design. The design begins in the center and radiates out, forming beautiful curves that are filled with pattern. The tribal tattoos were carved into the skin and rubbed with ash. Maori tattoos were placed on the face, back, chest, and arms. The more important you were, the more tattooing you had.

The traditional Samoan tattoo consists of very detailed geometric patterns. Traditionally, they cover a man from his waist to his knees. Woman have the same tattooing, but it is not as detailed or dense. A more modern Hawaiian Tattoo is the shoulder tattoo. Images are rich with geometric design.

The Celts and Danes tattooed their family crest on themselves. The ancient Egyptians tattooed themselves as a form of adornment.

In Japan, woman that were of age and getting married were tattooed. If a woman was not properly tattooed, she was thought to have committed a sin and was sentenced to death. (Yikes!)

The Christians tattooed Jesus Fish on themselves. The Native American Indians tattooed animals and images that linked them to a tribe. The ancient Mexico, the Aztecs tattooed images of their slain enemies.

So, each culture seems to have some form of tattooing in their ancient history. Does our love affair with tribal tattoos have roots in our wanting to belong? Is it pride in our heritage? Is it our personal passage into adulthood? I think it is all of the above. A little bit of heritage, a little culture, a feeling of inclusion. There is nothing like a powerful, beautiful shoulder tattoo that is meaningful to you.

Whatever your reason, tribal tattoos are really intricate in nature, and powerful in design. Find the right one and you will be happy with it forever. Don’t spend enough time looking and tweaking the design, and you will be very unhappy. Tribal tattoos are generally large and most have a lot of black. Difficult to cover over, and difficult to remove. Think hard, do your research, find an excellent tattoo artist, and you will be all set. Peace always.

Angel Tattoo Designs and Their Meaning

May 4th, 2009

Did you ever see an angel tattoo design on someone walking down the street and not wonder what it means? A gorgeous delicate set of angel wings on the back? A beautiful little full angel on the shoulder? How about a portrait with wings surrounded by a name. Is the person with the tattoo a little bit of the archangel Michael or a little Lucifer? Intriguing isn’t it?

There is something so wonderfully innocent about an angel tattoo. Something so alluring, and personal. It intrigues us to figure out the meaning of the angel tattoo design, or the angel wing tattoo design. What does it mean to the person it belongs to? Have they lost someone special? Are they very spiritual or is it “protecting” them? I  would venture to say that all wearers of angel tattoos have a deep personal connection to their tattoo. It becomes their own personal “tribal” tattoo, if you will.

For some, the angel tattoo symbolizes freedom. Freedom to live as you wish, do what you wish. It symbolizes spirituality, love and protection. A connection with something higher and more powerful than yourself. The protection of a guardian angel and the love you feel for the special people in your life.  For some, angel tattoos and wing tattoos symbolize the fine line between good and evil. The beautiful Archangel Michael vs. the fallen Archangel Lucifer. Light vs. Dark, Good vs. Bad, … Are you a Michael or a bit of a Lucifer?

Angel tattoos come in a wide variety of sizes and designs. Some are very, very intricate, looking as if you could almost pluck the feathers right off the wings.  This is to the credit of a very good and patient tattoo artist.  Back Tattoos of  Angel wings can fill the entire back, with fabulously detailed wings. They can be light or dark in color. Usually the darker will symbolize the dark side of life or the fallen angel. Or, it is just the personal taste of the wearer. Some choose to put the angel wings on the lower back with the wings spread out. As far as lower back tattoos go, this looks really cool. Wing tattoos also look great on the back of the ankle with the wings open and pointing up. Really, it is one tattoo design that can be put just about anywhere and look great. Surround it with some flowers or scroll work, maybe with some lettering and you are set. If you love tribal tattoos, see if you can get an artist to draw your angel tattoo or wing tattoo in a Maori or tribal style.

Whether you are a guy or girl, and whatever the reason for getting an angel or wing tattoo, be it spiritual, memorial, representative of your guardian angel, tongue and cheek symbolism of your personality, or simply because you think it’s cool, do your research. Find the perfect tattoo design for you.

Be very careful when choosing your Tattoo design. You want the best angel tattoo design or angel wing tattoo design you can afford. You also want to find the best tattoo artist you can afford. There is nothing worse than a poorly inked tattoo. Choose your design and artist wisely and you will be happy with your tattoo forever.  After all, once it is there, well, you better love it.

Peace Always.
